Kitchen organising tips for new parents.

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting time, so make it smoother with a fully organised home to welcome your bundle of joy into.

While you don’t need to throw away everything from your pre-parenting life, this might well be the opportunity to clear the spare room of your extra ”stuff”, and start preparing this room as the nursery.

These tips will ensure the essentials are dealt with before the big day, and means that managing visitors and guests is easier with great systems and less clutter.

Kitchen drawer - clear an accessible drawer for storing all those feeding bits and pieces like bottles, sterilising equipment or breast pump and bags. This drawer will later become home to sippy cups and plastic plates as your baby grows.

Fridge & Freezer

Spend some time preparing some easily heated meals for those days when it’s all too hard. A homemade nutritious meal is a must to keep up the energy of your new life as a mum. If friends ask what they can do - ask if they would contribute to your freezer, a win win for everyone.

Fridge - take the opportunity to clear out your fridge. You won’t be needing ingredients for fancy dinners, and there’s always unidentifiable food things to go out, so make room for formula, expressed milk and those casseroles and meals generously prepared by friends and relatives. When you’ve cleared it out, give your fridge a good top to bottom clean, using diluted vinegar on stubborn stains. A last wipe over with some warm water with a splash of vanilla essence leaves a pleasant and clean smell.

While feeling energetic, this task is a must-do. Start by placing everything on the kitchen bench, tossing items which are out of date, with moths, stale - then anything you really no longer need or will use can be donated to a charity. Cleaning all the shelves and putting things back in categories, baskets are great for organising, and glass jars the ultimate storage for anything the mice or moths might take a fancy to. Now that you have a better idea of what is actually there, plan a big shop (online if possible - as not only is it convenient - you avoid being tempted by the 2 for 1 offer in the Tim Tam aisle) to replenish and stock up before the baby comes.

Life with a newborn can feel chaotic, but with an organised home, it will feel less so.
